Emigrants left Earth two millennia ago to escape the genocidal horror of the Mutant Wars. The conflict had its origins in unrestrained human genetic engineering. What started out as alterations to repair genetic defects morphed into enhancements. Once these enhanced individuals were no longer seen as human, the wars began.

Pacifica was a harsh world but one the emigrants thought could be terraformed to satisfy their needs.  Unfortunately, they brought the consequences of playing God with them.

They never imagined they would lose their technology. They didn’t plan on fighting a never-ending war. They didn’t believe the immoral society they had escaped would ever find them. Sometimes things just don’t go your way.

Tee isn’t overly concerned with the life-or-death struggles of Pacifica. His cousin’s girlfriend is so much more interesting. He dreams about a future together. But first he has to survive.

Tee thought his world was unknown to the rest of humanity. He was taught his ancestors had left the immoral civilization that spawned them behind. He believed their planet was well hidden in its remote corner of the universe.

Pacifica wasn’t perfect. It definitely wasn’t Eden. Not even close. The genetically altered psychopaths who roamed the majority of their world were a constant threat. Growing enough food in a pre-industrial civilization was a challenge involving hard work, sacrifice, and good luck. But for all its problems, Pacifica was home. Tee’s people were free.

Tee lost his freedom and his youthful innocence in brutal fashion.  He discovers that what he was taught in school was false. Slavery has not disappeared from the human condition. Blood sports are not illegal. Pacifica is not alone. There are bigger fish in the pond. And those fish are hungry.

Sector 27 is viewed by the Commonwealth as an insignificant poverty-stricken neighborhood. A place where an up-and-coming power broker can show their worth by squeezing water out of a stone. The problem with power and wealth is that those who desire them never have enough. The Commonwealth has degraded into a society where justice and freedom are words without meaning. Colonists are no longer fellow human beings. They are merely tools in service to the jaded desires of the powerful.

Victor has imparted his skills and knowledge. But does it matter? Will it help bring peace and freedom? If not, do the colonies of Sector 27 have any chance of a good life under the yoke of the Commonwealth? Or is the desire for dignity merely one more lost cause in humanities’ long history of lost causes.

With violence and political turmoil swirling around him, Tee just wants his simple life back.
